January 11, 2010
Welcome to the January 2010 issue of DPTips Central newsletter!
Firstly, we hope you had peaceful and enjoyable holiday season and may the New Year be a prosperous and joyous one for you!
Photography Competitions and Exhibitions
Voies Off, which puts on nightly screenings and daily portfolio reviews during the world's longest-running photo Rencontres d'Arles' fringe festival , is calling for entries. Photographers are invited to send projects that take on a critical look at the modern world and are with a chance to win a €2,000 award.
Photography Industry News
Following the negative press resulting from the application of sections 43 and 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 where recently several high profile photojournalists were stopped by police from simply taking photos of buildings in Central London, the Metropolitan Police has reissued guidance on photography and the law .
The general points of the reissued advice are that officers do not have the power to delete digital images, destroy film or to prevent photography in a public place under either sections. They are also reminded that under these powers they must not access text messages, voicemails or emails.
In addition, where it is clear that the person beinn searched under Sections 43 and 44 is a journalist, officers should exercise caution before viewing images as images acquired or created for the purpose of journalism may constitute journalistic material and should not be viewed without a Court Order.
Photography Market Place
FocalPop is a stock agency offering a new way of thinking about image libraries. Its working model is as follows – image seekers post briefs stating what they are looking for and how much they are willing to pay for an image – then if they want to take up the brief, the photographers have a specified amount of time to shoot and submit an image, and after that time’s elapsed the seeker will choose their favourite.
If you are looking for an industry advice from the best of the best, then the Magnum Photos – Professional Practice weekend event is for you. It does not matter whether you are a professional photographer or just taking the leap to full-time photography, the event will cover a wide variety of topics – marketing and promotion, printing and file digitisation, books and publishing, editorial and stock sales, commercial photographic sales and exhibition proposing.
