Assignment: Making Flowing Water Turn to Silk

These are very popular shots but to get the flowing water looking like flowing velvet, you need to shoot in low light:

  •     At dusk or dawn

  •     In fog or in winter

  •     When the sun is low

  •     In a shady spot

  • Then...

    1.     Find a place by a body of moving water

    2.   Frame your photograph - set your camera on a tripod and compose the image.

    3.     Set your camera to shutter priority mode.

    4.     Set your camera to a slow shutter speed - say, 1/60 of a second.

    5.     Set your camera's timer so that the camera doesn't shake when you try to push the shutter button.

     6.     Release your shutter and wait for the camera to take a picture.

     7.     Reset your camera to a slower shutter speed - say, 1/30 of a second.

     8.   Repeat Steps 4 through 6, using a slower shutter speed each time, until the flowing water looks like velvet.

    Have fun and enjoy...

Assignment: Create Special Effects from the Way Your Camera Perceives Light

To create a special effect from how your camera perceives light, press the shutter halfway down in one place and move to another place to shoot a picture, in the following way:

     1.   Set your camera to automatic mode.

     2.   Turn off the flash.

     3.   Sit by a window.

     4.   Point your camera out the window so that your entire frame is in daylight.

     5.   Press the shutter release halfway down.

     6.   Point the camera inside the room to where there is some colour or a little light (less than what was out the window).

     7.    Press the shutter button all the way down.

Shape, Pattern  and  Texture  Photo  Assignments

Assignment: Object Shapes Suggesting A, B and C Letter Shapes

Go and photograph objects or parts of objects that look like or suggest the letters A, B and C.

Make sure that the shapes of your objects suggest the letter shapes and where possible use contrast (in color, texture, lighting or tone) to make the letter shape obvious in your picture.
